A First Impression That Stuck
Ellen Hamilton knew immediately that Beacon Hill felt different.
“From the minute I walked in, it just felt right,” she said about Beacon Hill senior living community in Lombard, Illinois. “People came up to me and started talking. Everyone was so friendly, I actually wondered if it had been staged. But it wasn’t. People here are genuinely warm.”
After living in Riverside for many years, she had been exploring senior living communities, and a friend recommended she check out Beacon Hill. She made a few visits and attended a resident happy hour. Sitting with women who had lived at Beacon Hill for different amounts of time, from a few months to several years, gave her something brochures never could, a real perspective. She was sold. When she made the decision, she was filled with relief and joy.
Turning an Overwhelming Process Into a Manageable One
Still, deciding to move and actually moving are two very different things.
Even after downsizing once before from a large house to an apartment, Ellen dreaded the familiar challenge of sorting through her many belongings. This time, she did not do it alone. She turned to Just Task Us. “It’s pronounced like ‘just ask us,’ and that’s completely how it works,” she said about the downsizing and concierge-style service that helped transform an overwhelming process into a manageable one.
“They helped me with everything,” she said. “I could not have done it without them.”
Together, they made a plan for her belongings…what to keep, what to sell, what to let go. They coordinated movers, arranged furniture pickup, and even found a buyer for her Steinway piano, one of her biggest concerns.
When Everything Lined Up
The timing moved fast. Ellen closed on her apartment just before leaving for Scotland for Christmas 2025, returned at the end of December, and moved into Beacon Hill in January 2026.
“It all lined up,” she said.
On moving day, the support continued. Packing, organizing, and then unpacking at her new apartment were all handled with care.
“I felt like a queen. Teri from Just Task Us, who was helping me, told me to sit down in my new home and just advise and point,” Ellen said. “That mountain of boxes that looked so daunting seemed to magically disappear while we laughed and shared stories of our lives.”
Keeping What Matters Most
Within days, everything was in place. Ellen, who spent her career in commercial real estate and later as Director of Real Estate for the University of Illinois Chicago, brought with her a curated collection of artwork from travels and local artists. Other belongings, she realized, were easier to let go of than expected.
“You have to let go,” she said. “I’d already had the enjoyment from possessions I loved and I like thinking that someone else will be excited to enjoy them as well.”
A Sense of Relief and Belonging
What followed was something many people hope for but do not always expect so quickly: a sense of relief.
“I knew I was home,” she said. “I kept the things I really love and am surrounded by them and by people who care about me.”
That feeling has only grown stronger.
“I love it here, more and more every day,” Ellen said.
The Difference Is the People
What stands out most is the people.
“I had looked at other senior living communities. It’s different here. The residents at Beacon Hill are warm, genuine, open-hearted people, eager to share in the community experience,” she said. “That’s the difference.”
For Ellen, choosing a continuing care retirement community with access to all levels of care should her health needs change, also brought peace of mind for the future.
“I know I’ll always be taken care of here,” she said.
A New Chapter to Appreciate
Looking back, she sees the move not as a difficult transition, but as the start of something just as meaningful as everything that came before.
“All the stages of my life have been wonderful, and this stage is wonderful too. I feel truly blessed and lucky to be here.”
