Solo and Thriving: What It’s Like To Retire Alone at Beacon Hill

Living solo doesn’t mean going through life alone — especially in a senior living community like Beacon Hill, where luxurious and purposeful experiences make every day more fulfilling. Our lifestyle is about offering a seamless way for single retirees to stay active, engaged, and connected.

“Come with an open mind and an open heart, and be prepared to enjoy yourself,” said resident Glen Haase, who jumped right into community life since moving here in May 2023. He joined the social committee and is a familiar face behind the bar at Friday night social hours, mixing up his signature Manhattan, and swapping stories with fellow residents.

When he’s not serving up cocktails and conversation, you’ll find Glen soaking in the sunset from his one-bedroom apartment, tending to his sun-loving plants and flowers, and figuring out which of the many fun on-site options he’ll dive into next. “There are plenty of activities and everybody keeps themselves busy,” he shared. “There are nights when I have to decide, ‘Am I going to go bowling […] or am I going to see a movie?’”

From chair yoga and fitness center workouts to live music with dancing and themed events, there’s always something happening, Glen said. He also raves about the murder mystery dinners and historical programs, including a recent one on Franklin Delano Roosevelt. “It’s a great life here. I love it. I just simply love it.”

Retiring Solo? You’re Not Alone at Beacon Hill

Retiring alone can bring up a lot of questions. What to do when you are retired and alone? How do you build a fulfilling life without a partner by your side? What does single retirement planning even look like? At Beacon Hill, we understand that retiring single isn’t about doing it all on your own — it’s about finding the right place where you can be independent while also feeling connected and supported.

Beacon Hill is home to an engaged community of retired singles who are thriving. From the moment you move in, you’re surrounded by friendly neighbors and team members who genuinely care. Whether you’re heading to a morning yoga class, chatting over lunch in one of our dining venues, or jumping into a book discussion group, there are countless opportunities to meet people and build meaningful connections.

So, what makes Beacon Hill different for solo retirees? We start by creating an environment where independence is respected, but you’re never on your own unless you want to be. Our community calendar is packed with solo activities for seniors that naturally bring people together, including concerts, discussion groups, art workshops, day trips, and more.

You don’t have to make the first move. Just show up, and you’ll quickly find yourself part of the conversation. It’s easy to connect when you’re surrounded by others who share similar interests and are navigating the same stage of life. Friendships form quickly in an environment built on meaningful experiences.

For many, Beacon Hill has helped answer the question, “Single and retired, what to do?” You might find yourself leading a committee, organizing a wine tasting, or cheering on neighbors during trivia night. Even if you prefer quieter moments, our green spaces and peaceful common areas give you room to reflect and recharge on your terms.

When it comes to single retirement planning, it’s also about having confidence in your future and the freedom to enjoy it. Our maintenance-free lifestyle means no more worrying about home repairs, snow removal, or juggling bills. Weekly housekeeping, included utilities, and scheduled transportation allow you to focus on the things that matter — your well-being, your interests, and your social life.

And let’s not forget the relationships. Retired singles at Beacon Hill often speak about how easy it is to get involved and feel welcomed. You’ll notice the difference right away. Team members greet you by name, neighbors invite you to sit with them at meals, and there’s always something going on that sparks connection.

“If you’ve lived an active life or come from a lively, social family, you’ll feel right at home at Beacon Hill,” Glen said. “There are people who brighten my day just by saying hi. Everybody loves everybody here.”

Wondering how to prepare for old age alone? Start by choosing a community where it’s easy to meet people, share experiences, and feel like you belong. Beacon Hill gives you the structure, support, and social opportunities to flourish, no matter your relationship status. We’ve created a place where single retirement feels warm and approachable, and where each resident has the freedom to shape their day their way.

Join us for an upcoming event to meet and mingle with like-minded older adults and experience a community that supports solo living with spirit.
