At 67, Debbie Zeilner is one of Beacon Hill’s youngest residents. Here, age takes a back seat to a lifestyle that elevates every moment — proving that an exceptional quality of life isn’t defined by age, but enriched by it.
“Moving into Beacon Hill is the opposite of slowing down,” she said.
Debbie came to Beacon Hill in June of 2024, shortly after recovering from a broken wrist. At the time, she was working full-time as a bookkeeper and juggling the stress of managing a three-unit building in Chicago. Between minor health issues and the weight of daily responsibilities, she knew it was time for a change.
When she came across an ad highlighting Beacon Hill’s heated indoor pool and water aerobics classes, something clicked. “I thought — that’s exactly what I need,” she said. “I called for a tour right away.”
Working by Day, Dancing by Night
From her very first visit, Debbie felt at home. “The marketing team was so helpful, and the residents I met were so welcoming, friendly, and kind,” she said. “Even though I was one of the youngest residents when I moved in, I was more than ready to come here.”
A lifelong Chicagoan, Debbie grew up on the southwest side near Midway International Airport. She spent 15 years in accounting, followed by 14 years teaching 8th-grade math. Today, she works full-time from her independent living residence, managing bookkeeping responsibilities during the day and jumping into community life whenever possible.
“My schedule is definitely full,” she said. “There are so many activities here — you can be as involved as you want to be.”
And involved she is! Debbie’s favorites include water aerobics (of course), line dancing, Zumba, pet therapy, and Friday night live entertainment. But she’s also willing to step outside her comfort zone. Last fall, she strutted down the runway as a model in Beacon Hill’s Chico’s Fashion Show — something she never imagined herself doing.
“Trust me, I am NOT a model,” she laughed. “I still don’t know how they convinced me to do that!”
Inspired by Others, Eager To Explore More
Debbie is drawn to the community spirit at Beacon Hill and inspired by the older residents who live life to the fullest. “I’m amazed at the number of 80-, 90-, and even 100-year-olds who live very vibrant lives here,” she said. “I often think I’m in a ‘blue zone’ right here in Lombard!”
Whether she’s celebrating life’s big moments or embracing everyday fun, Debbie makes the most of her time at Beacon Hill. In February, she reserved a private room to throw her sister a 65th birthday party, complete with delicious catering by our culinary team. The following month, she rang in her own 67th birthday at our St. Patrick’s Day community celebration.
And the connections she’s made go beyond scheduled events. Over Easter, a fellow resident, Carole, invited Debbie and her family visiting from Mexico to join her at The Morton Arboretum, where Carole is a member. “It meant so much to be welcomed like that,” Debbie said. “That’s what this place is all about — people looking out for each other and sharing experiences.”
Looking ahead, Debbie hopes to join even more off-campus outings once she retires. “I’m excited to have more time to explore with friends and neighbors,” she said. “There’s always something fun on the calendar.”
Think You’re Too Young? Think Again
If you think senior living isn’t for you just yet, Debbie suggests visiting Beacon Hill.
“I’m so glad I made the decision to move here,” she said. “You gain freedom not just from chores and home maintenance, but to enjoy life, try new things, and be surrounded by people who lift you up.”
Debbie didn’t wait — and neither should you. Join us at an upcoming event or contact us today to discover the possibilities waiting for you at Beacon Hill.
